Navigating Licensing for International Real Estate Candidates in British Columbia

In a significant update to the regulatory framework, BCFSA has updated its requirements for trained international real estate licensing candidates in British Columbia. This initiative aligns with the International Credentials Recognition Act (“ICRA”) and the Real Estate Services Act (“RESA”), ensuring a transparent and accessible credential assessment process.

Key Licensing Requirements for International Candidates

English Language Proficiency

  • All international applicants must demonstrate English proficiency by achieving a level seven or higher on the Canadian English Proficiency Index Program General Test, provide proof of a bachelor’s degree or higher from an English-speaking institution, or have been licensed in another Canadian jurisdiction and satisfied their English language requirements.

Recognition of Prior Experience and Training

  • BCFSA acknowledges prior real estate experience, knowledge, or training from candidates from the United States, New Zealand, or Australia. These candidates may have certain educational requirements waived if they possess equivalent licences or comparable real estate services experience.

Candidates from Other International Jurisdictions

  • For those from jurisdictions without a formal real estate licensing framework, individual experiences and qualifications will be considered by BCFSA on a case-by-case basis, ensuring a fair evaluation process.
